One of the most difficult things this time of year is finding the perfect thing to wear. Transitional seasons can be unpredictable; sunny one day, raining and cold the next… It’s difficult to know how to dress on any given day. It’s even more difficult when you don’t have a wardrobe that is stocked with the basic necessities of every season.
So as I’ve been gearing up for fall with a lovely list of clothing I would like to acquire, I’ve also created a list of “wardrobe basics” because I know I’m not the only one who struggles with transitioning from summer to fall.
Tops can be a tricky thing, but they are the basics of every wardrobe so we’re going to start there. Try going for simple colors with a touch of excitement in the cut or style of the shirt. I’m a fan of this scalloped top from Topshop, only $25. Of course, I’m also a huge fan of stripes. I wear them frequently. I recently purchased this one from Banana Republic, currently 40% off with code BRFALL.
Capes and cardigans are a fantastic way to add on a layer when it gets drafty outside. Right now, I’m a big fan of capes because there are so many fun ones in style. I received this adorable one from LOFT from my family on my birthday and have been anxiously waiting to have the opportunity to wear it! I’m also a fan of this one and this one, also from LOFT. Here are some more of my picks for capes and cardigans:
Dresses are probably my favorite part of fall clothing because you get to break out the cute tights and leggings. One of my favorite fall colors is mustard, and this dress does not disappoint! Another favorite that will be making its way into my closet is this plaid dress from LOFT. Might I just add that Loft is killing it with their transitional and fall pieces. Here are some of my other favorite dresses:
Accessories are really the most important transitional pieces when it comes to fall. I’ve worn the same outfits in the summer and fall and pulled it off by switching up my shoes, adding a scarf or changing a handbag. Some of my favorites this fall are the bucket bag (here’s a really affordable one!), this blanket scarf, and booties.
One final thing about transitionals: keep it simple. Some things that tend to stick around in style are browns, taupes, ivories, and blacks. Plus this year, you can’t go wrong with marsala, the Pantone color of the year, in any style!
Who else is excited for fall clothing? What are your favorite pieces you can’t wait to start wearing again?

Ooh! Booties are definitely my favorite. I’m actually busting mine out with a summer-y top this evening for a function I’m going to. They’re a great way to extend the “life” of your summer clothes!
